DYE TESTING

Before you can sell any property in the City of Pittsburgh, a dye test must be performed by a Master Plumber such as All-Pro Pittsburgh Backflow. The test takes approximately one hour and can detect a slew of concerns. Read on for more information.

What is a dye test?

A dye test is a common household test that will determine if your property’s plumbing is draining properly into your city, borough or county’s public sewage and sanitation system. If it is not draining properly, then stormwater is entering sanitary sewer systems and are playing a leading role in sewage basement backups and sanitary sewer overflows. During the dye test, your Master Plumber will place a non-staining water soluble dye table into the drain or downspout of your property and flush it. The area is then examined for traces of dyed water.

A positive dye test (failed test) will, by law, require the disconnection of stormwater connections from the sanitary sewers— something that All-Pro Pittsburgh Backflow can correct quickly and efficiently.

WHEN AND WHY WOULD I NEED A DYE TEST?

Property owners who wish to sell a property (home or commercial) in the City of Pittsburgh must be in compliance with the Dye Testing Ordinance, an ordinance introduced to the city in 2006, before the property can be sold. All property owners must then submit an Evidence of Compliance Certificate Application to the Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority.

A dye test is to ensure stormwater is not connected to the sanitary sewer. A Master Plumber like All-Pro Pittsburgh Backflow will perform a dye test on your property to certify that is in compliance with your local municipality. Additionally, a video inspection can be performed, if required by your local borough.

Should you property fail this test, we will make the repairs in accordance with current codes, and provide the property owner with the aforementioned certificate of compliance in order to proceed with the sell of the property.

If you are in Pittsburgh, West Mifflin, Mt Lebanon or anywhere everywhere in between and need a dye test and video inspections for your home sale, contact us at All-Pro Pittsburgh Backflow as soon as possible. We’re happy to help our neighbors in need!
